theprojects

The SHORE project’s central research hypothesis is that seaports and marine vessels are one of the main responsible for high carbon footprint and contaminating emissions in coastal areas, especially near highly
trafficked ports. To reduce these emissions, smart ports can be implemented, increasing the vessels electrification and integrating renewable energies and storage systems technologies based on geographical characteristics as well as consider hydrogen production as an effective storage system.

Project financed by Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo ANID.

Storage and Renewable Energies

Storage and renewable energies sizing for seaport microgrids considering Chilean ports geographical conditions. The SHORE project will propose renewable energies and storage system sizing of smart port MGs, considering the current load demand of each port, the new load demand considering ship’s electrical supply, and the available renewable energies based on the port’s geographical position. A reduced model will be experimentally tested in the laboratory, and different storage technologies will be compared.

Design and control of an AC/DC

Design and control of an AC/DC power conversion interface based on multilevel converters for port implementation and control of vessels cold ironing. During the SHORE project a multilevel AC/DC converter, based on the structures reviewed in the state-of-the-art section, will be designed, constructed, and tested considering the electrical specifications of the vessel’s cold ironing study case.

Study, modelling, and innovation

Study, modelling, and innovation in the desalination and electrolization process for hydrogen production. An innovative technique to produce hydrogen directly from sea water will be studied during the SHORE project. The study will focus on desalinization technique and direct electrolization of sea water. A scaled prototype to test the proposed technique will be constructed during the project.

Develop the power conversion system

Develop the power conversion system for the fuel-cell to electrical grid interface. A power electronic conversion system able to interface the smart port MG with an industrial fuel-cell will be proposed and a scaled down prototype will be constructed during the shore project.

Demand Side Management

Implementation of demand side management control strategies for the ship – interface – port system. The SHORE project will develop load demand control strategies and experimentally test them. These strategies will be applied to different port MGs which have been optimised considering cost, frequency, voltage, storage systems life expectance, and the geographical conditions of the port. This interaction will be feasible thanks to the ship power system developed in Objective 1, the interfaces from Objectives 2 and 4.

Training of new experts

Training of new experts in ports power consumption and hydrogen generation. The SHORE project aims to train new engineers in port related problems, while developing connections with industry at national and international level, aiming to provide practical solutions to industrial problems and increasing human capital international experience.

Dissemination of results

Dissemination of scientific and technological results: The SHORE project aims to disseminate results through the maintenance of a website, organization of seminars, the outreach is local schools near ports, the placement for postdoctoral researches and students in the foreign universities involved in the project, visit to industry and data collecting and display, with the objective of providing a clear view of the current ports situation and propose technology that will reduce their environmental impact.
